Stepping Out, Showing Up: My Experience with Networking Events in Liverpool

Until last week, I had never attended a networking event. I’ve been self-employed for over a decade, built a successful brand strategy and marketing business, and—somewhat unusually—I’ve done it all without ever attending an interview or a networking session.

But things are changing.

As part of my personal and professional growth, and with a strong desire to connect with more local entrepreneurs and small business owners, I stepped outside my comfort zone and attended three different networking events in Liverpool.

I didn’t go just to hand out business cards. I went with the intention. To listen. To observe. And yes—to offer value through what I know best: helping others find and express their brand voice.

The Power of Being Genuinely Interested

I attended the events armed with one of my favourite quotes by Dale Carnegie from How to Win Friends and Influence People:

“You can make more friends in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you.”

This approach changed everything. When you attend with genuine curiosity rather than a rehearsed elevator pitch, something shifts. The conversations are more meaningful, and connections grow more organically.

Documenting the Journey

As a professional photographer, I realised during a recent birthday reflection that I rarely take photos for fun anymore. So, for these events, I decided to bring my camera—not for a client, not for work, but for me.

The result? A series of candid, documentary-style images that capture the real moments from the events: genuine smiles, conversations in motion, and the quiet power of connection.

The Events That Made the Difference

1. Ways to WOW – Feel Good Friday

(Hosted by Jamie Wray and Jay Tenermix) A vibrant morning filled with uplifting conversations, personal development insights, and genuine connection. Jamie is a passionate leader who brings an energising blend of motivation and education. Ways to WOW isn’t just a name—it’s a mindset, and Jamie lives and breathes it.

Wow, Friday mornings take place at The Plaza in Liverpool city centre. Here are some behind-the-scenes, documentary-style photos from a networking event in Liverpool at Wow HQ.

2. Boomerang Collective – Thursday Morning Meetups

Structured, purposeful, and built around long-term relationship building, Boomerang Collective helps businesses build a referral-driven network. I really appreciated the professionalism and consistent energy that came from this group. You could feel the commitment in the room.

3. MOVE Netwalking – Saturday in Sefton Park

This is networking with a twist—literally on the move. I’ve been a quiet participant in the Saturday sessions at Sefton Park for a while, and I finally brought my camera along.

MOVE offers a refreshing take on traditional networking: it’s outdoors, inclusive, and deeply energising. It also runs city centre meetups on Wednesday evenings at the Pier Head and on Sunday mornings in West Kirby.

My Takeaways (and Tips) for Networking Events in Liverpool

Here’s what I learned from stepping into the Liverpool networking scene:

  • Go with intention, not a pitch. Show up curious and open to learning about others.
  • Be consistent. Real relationships are built over time. Don’t just show up once.
  • Bring your personality. Don’t over-rehearse your “introduction”—people connect with people, not taglines.
  • Use your skills to give back. I brought my camera to enjoy photography again (just for fun!) and ended up with a documentary-style record of the events.
  • Reflect and refine. After each event, I journaled what I learned and how I felt. It’s a great way to stay grounded.

In Summary

Networking Events in Liverpool aren’t just about promoting your business—it’s about being part of something bigger. It’s about listening, sharing, and growing together. I’m so glad I took that step outside of my comfort zone.

Whether you’re a business owner, freelancer, or just someone looking to connect, I highly recommend giving any of these communities a try.
